They were two types of the mastiff-type, the big Tsang-Khyi which were used as guardians for the Tibetan Buddhist monks, and the Do-Khyi, who served as flock guardians and used to travel with nomadic shepherds.
In the late 1950s, the first two Tibetan mastiffs were given to the President of the United States as a gift, but they were taken to a farm of animals and disappeared from the public eye. However, the first Tibetan Mastiff Club of America was founded in 1974 as an association for the American noble breed.
The National Specialty Match was the first show that displayed the Tibetan Mastiff as a unique and pure breed. But today, it is extremely difficult to find a purebred Tibetan Mastiff due to several reasons.
