Melatonin can be used as a sedative or to control convulsions in dogs. It can also help regulate the rhythms of the animal’s heart. It is particularly useful for canines that are scared of loud noises, such as thunderstorms, fireworks, or other sounds.

Melatonin is often prescribed for dogs who suffer from separation anxiety to help them stay relaxed when their owner has to leave the house for work. Some pups get too excited at night and start pacing or otherwise become a nuisance while their owner is trying to sleep.
